How not being confident in your offer, means people won't be confident to buy

Oof I have a doozy of a 'oh wow, she's right' email for you today!

People often fear being confident online in case it seems like they're being cocky or salesy.

Women especially tend to play down their confidence in fear of being judged or criticised for being proud of what they offer.

But I want you to ask yourself this...

If you aren't confident about your offer, why would others be? This concept was brought up in a Chromatical Club masterclass the other day and I can't stop thinking about it so wanted to talk about it more. When it comes to what we offer, what we say, our words, our tone, our confidence EVERYTHING that we share online... It has to be confident.

We can still be vulnerable, we can be unsure about life, about direction about anything. That is TOTALLY okay to share about. But when it comes to our offer? We have to be confident.

We need to stop curating our words to those who may judge us instead of those who love what we do.

We don't need to be modest. We deserve to be proud of what we do and to share our confidence.

We need to show that we are confident, or the people we are selling to won't be won't be confident to buy.

Do you think Apple got where they are by saying 'our products are okay'? "I don't think so Tim". (Please tell me you remember that quote from Home Improvement?)

Your words matter. If your words lack confidence, (and it was @byjenamarie who said 'confidence doesn't have to mean loud'.) then people won't be confident to book or buy from you.

Here's an example:

👉Which piece of art would you buy?

1️⃣I'm about to release my newest collection. I think it's pretty good. I really like the blue theme the most. I hope you like them. If they aren't exactly what you hoped for I can go add some different colours if that is more to your taste. I know these probably don't suit everyone's house or style but am here to help change them to suit. Stay tuned for the big release.

2️⃣I'm about to release my newest collection! It's my best collection by far. I'm so so proud of these. I really like the blue theme the most and I know you'll love it too. Wait till you see the entire collection. I lovvvve how amazing they turned out. Stay tuned for the big release.

The first example is not sure of themselves. It lacks confidence. They're willing to change their art, modify it to fit others instead of owning their creativity and saying this is their vision. So we lose confidence in investing in them.

The second example lets people know that their works are worth investing in as the maker is confident.

These words have been curated intentionally for this article and aren't likely what someone would write. But any kind of doubt in your voice will create doubt to those thinking of buying or booking.

  • Confidence doesn't have to equal salesy

  • Confidence doesn't have to equal arrogant

  • Confidence doesn't have to equal cocky

  • Confidence doesn't have to equal gross.

  • Confidence just has to show that you trust and back yourself and your offering.

A lack of confidence also reduces the perceived value of your offering. You can appear as 'beginner' or 'amateur' which people often hesitate to invest in, or at least hesitate to invest as much in because it raises too many questions. It adds potential risk to their investment. Whereas confidence builds trust and removes a great deal risk and worry.

Imagine booking a holiday and they're like 'You should get there on time' vs 'You will arrive with plenty of time before the event'.

Simple changes in what you say makes a HUGE difference in what people take from it.

Remember... YOU are your biggest advocate. YOU know your product or offering more than anyone. And if you can't confidently talk about it, people won't be comfortable to buy.

People follow your brand because they like you. Don't fear being proud of what you offer. Hope this inspires you and gives you the freedom to talk with more pride and confidence about what you do.
