Treat social media like a magazine

This analogy about how you use social media is nothing but the goldiest of gold.

I talk in Chromatical Club a LOT about growing your socials (and other marketing topics like SEO, branding, copywriting, emails, ads etc - but a LOT about socials) and I see so many people think that you have to post heaps!

But guess what… you don’t need to post heaps. In fact... sometimes (often) it's better if you don't!

It's all about posting quality posts consistently… and 'consistently' doesn’t have to mean often. It's great if it is... but if you can't post quality posts consistently, it's better do do it less frequently.

Say you post 2 days a week and those posts are REALLY good. That will be WAY better for your account than posting 7 days a week with quick posts.

Quick posts are much less likely to get engagement, which affects all those algorithms that I talked about in the last email I sent. Quality posts, (where you are strategic in figuring out ways to get that engagement) end up growing your account.

So how do you work out whether something is worth posting or not?

Eeee, here comes the analogy.

Think of your social feed like it’s your very own magazine.

Mag companies don’t spit out a magazine every week right? If they did, the content would be sooo rushed and not at all quality. Instead, they spend every month building something brilliant so that you love it. Because they know quality mags will get you to buy again. If it’s created for the sake of ‘getting something out’, they will lose buyers and go out of business because their content is 'blah'.

Same goes with your socials.

If you start to get lazy with articles and imagery, people stop buying your magazine (unfollow or don't engage).

So be readable and be exciting! Have that effect of people wanting to get to the newsagents and buy when you release an issue (a post). Be that brand who people talk about at the water cooler about the latest issue of.. (or, 'Did you see their post?')

Be findable on that newsagent’s rack (people's feeds) and don't blend in with the other mags of the same niche. Make sure you stand out as the special and unique brand that you are!

Spend time and effort creating each issue so that you know the content within is something people will LOVE and pour over and fold the pages corner to remember for another day or tear it out and stick it on their fridge (or save that post or share it with a friend).

As soon as you stop giving people a reason to read and when you stop sharing things people can connect with, then why would they buy the next issue? (why would they keep following or engaging?)

Look at your feed like a consumer would look at a mag. Are you exciting to read? Do you cover all the topics your ideal customer would hope for in your own issue? Would people be happy to spend money to buy your mag?

Orrrr...

  • Is it basically just a sales catalogue promoting your things all the time?

  • Is it all reshares of inspo posts already circling the web?

  • Is it copywriting that offers little value or insight?

  • Are you posting 'filler posts' that are random and you know are there to just buff out the pages?

  • Are you unclear on who your mag buyers are, therefore unsure what content pillars you should be serving them?

  • Is your content unbalanced so it's filled with just one or two types of posts (saley posts and behind the scenes) instead of an array of articles perfectly suited to your niche?

This magazine analogy will help you look at your feed from a different perspective before you post. Use it when you formulate your new social strategy.

So… are you ready to start posting some quality magaziney posts? YASSS!!
